Equality - A Fundamental Truth
Bahá’ís believe that the equality of men and women is a fundamental truth about human reality and not just a desired condition to be achieved for the good of society. The reality of the human being is his or her soul; and the soul, we firmly believe, has no sex. Men and women exhibit physical differences that undeniably influence some aspects of how they experience the world. Yet, in their essence, in their qualities and potentialities, in those aspects that make human beings human, men and women are without distinction. Neither can claim superiority over the other. “Women and men have been and will always be equal in the sight of God.” It is therefore imperative that the equality that already exists as a spiritual truth be expressed in practice.
A Prerequisite for Global Prosperity and Peace
The achievement of full equality between women and men is one of the most important prerequisites for global prosperity and the advancement of society. The denial of such equality, in whatever form, perpetrates an injustice against one half of the world’s population and promotes in men harmful attitudes and habits that are carried from the family to the workplace, to political life, and ultimately to international relations. There are no grounds, moral, practical, or biological, upon which such denial can be justified. Only as women are welcomed into and achieve full partnership in all fields of human endeavor will the moral and psychological climate be created in which peace and prosperity can emerge.
In accordance with this teaching of Bahá’u’lláh, the worldwide Bahá’í community has been at the forefront of the movement to advance the rights of women for more than a century. And the Bahá’í approach, which advocates full equality and a firm sense of partnership between women and men, is increasingly recognised as being on the cutting edge of women’s issues worldwide.
